Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is guided life force energy. Reiki is a spiritual, vibrational healing practice. Reiki’s origin dates back to the teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1920's. Usui was a lifelong spiritual aspirant, a lay monk with a wife and two children. I am trained in the traditional Usui Reiki method.

Think of Reiki as a living prayer. With Reiki, we attune to our healed, whole and complete self. The focus is not to fix anyone but to affirm their inherent perfection at the level of their Spirit. It is amazing to behold how a person’s energy body actively responds to this recognition of Truth. The body seeks balance and naturally draws Reiki in the places it is needed to balance one’s energy. The Reiki practitioner trusts the Reiki to go where it is needed and thus does not need to direct the Reiki with any personal will or agenda. Much like other integrative therapies, Reiki soothes the nervous system thereby shifting the body from domination by the "fight or flight" response to the relaxation response, activating the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Reiki Benefits

Reiki clients express feelings of increased peace and well-being, deeper rest, increased compassion for themselves and others, sometimes the connection to relatives who have passed, reduced pain, and less anxiety to name a few. Results vary from person to person. Reiki is gentle and powerful at the same time.

Reiki Session Explained

Before scheduling energy work with you I want to spend about 15 minutes on the phone chatting. During this discovery call you can tell me what you are hoping to achieve, relief from anxiety for example, and ask any questions you may have about your session. This allows us to build rapport and save time for more energy work during your session. And, if by chance, we are not a good fit I will gladly refer you to someone else. In addition, if a client has acute mental illness I will not see them without them having other support and resources in place. Reiki is a wonderful adjunct to psychotherapy, not a replacement.

When you arrive for your appointment we will chat for a few minutes, sometimes longer if you need to express yourself more. In many cases, we use tapping to clear charged emotional energy before Reiki.  Sessions are 60-90 minutes long. Please remember that energy work is not psychotherapy. I do have a Master’s in Social Work, however I am not a licensed therapist. I will happily refer you to a therapist if needed.

After talking and tapping, you will lie on the massage table fully clothed while soft music is playing and the lights are dim to increase relaxation. I may clear your energy field with a smudge wand if you aren't bothered by the smoke. You are encouraged to close your eyes and rest. During the session, there is little to no conversation so that you can fully relax. My hands will be placed along different places on your body and head, never on breasts or genitals. If there is any area you prefer not to be touched please let me know. Your comfort and safety are paramount. When Reiki is complete I will rub your shoulder to let you know we are done. You may fall asleep and that’s perfectly normal.

What to Expect When Our Reiki Session is Complete

When the session is over you will have a few minutes to get oriented and drink some water as well. Hydration is very important to keep the energy flowing. I will follow up with you over text or email within a few days to see how you are doing.

How Many Sessions Do I Need to Feel Better and Experience Results?

After one session clients typically feel lighter and more peaceful. Sometimes, stored emotional energy comes up in the days following. That's your body letting it go. Be gentle and kind to yourself. Drink lots of water to help move the energy along. Soaking in a salt bath is highly recommended! One session is just the beginning of what Reiki can accomplish. I encourage a minimum of 4 sessions over a month or two months' time to see deeper results. It is amazing what comes up for healing in clients with regular treatments. Reiki is illuminating. If there is stored pain, be it physical, emotional or spiritual, Reiki can bring it to the surface to be released.
